Jessie was a registered nurse for 12 years prior to enlistment, and continued this work in her service at the RCAF Station Hospital in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
In April 1941, after suffering chills for three days, she was admitted as a patient at her own workplace. The medical notes state, “Excruciating headache. Some rigidity of neck and spine. Throat inflamed.” The following day, she died of spinal meningitis.
Jessie’s parents were long since deceased, and so it was her brother James who received a letter a few days later from Air Vice Marshall Breadner: “Your sister was extremely popular and efficient and her loss is greatly deplored and keenly felt by all who served with her.”
