Phyllis grew up on a farm, and due to a childhood illness, did not start school until age 10. Her Personnel Selection Record notes that this “seems to have caused an inferiority complex as she was so far behind in school,” adding drily, “Evidence of this was noticed during the interview.” Nonetheless, the report concluded, “More should be quick to learn and efficient in her work.” She had a fiancé, who she had known since childhood; he was stationed in Kingston, and they intended to get married after the war.
Six months after enlisting, following basic training, she was admitted to hospital in Calgary, complaining of dizziness, severe headaches, numbness in her face and increasing deafness in one ear. A few weeks later, she died of complications following the removal of a brain tumour.
