Daughter of Felix and Helen Muise, of Springhaven
Known by her middle name Maimie, she was the second of thirteen children. Her Personnel Selection Record notes, “There is some indication that her family life and her relationship with her father has not been too happy.” The record goes on to note that she is enthusiastic about being a driver, but has only three months’ experience, concluding: “in view of her ability, it would appear undesirable to recommend her.”
After basic training, she took a driving course and was posted as a driver to Area Headquarters in Sydney, NS. In November 1943, a vehicle she was driving went into water, and she drowned in the accident.
Although her family was Catholic, she had listed her religion as Protestant on her enlistment form. When the Church found this out they refused to allow her to be buried in the Church cemetery limits, so she was buried just over the fence. Over time the cemetery acquired more land, and as a result she now lies buried in the middle of the cemetery. A Veterans Stone marks her final resting place.
