Daughter of Douglas and Isabel Luella Young, of Montreal

Isabel was an only child who was educated in both French and English. Her father died prior to the war. Her RCAF evaluation was mixed, with the medical officer writing, “Slightly less than average intelligence. Not very impressive,” while the interviewing officer assessed, “A good type of applicant. Intelligent and seems reliable.” She was taken on as a cook, and attended the School of Cookery in Guelph, Ontario.

Beginning in December 1942, she was hospitalized repeatedly. A lung infection was eventually diagnosed as pneumonia, which caused her death in March 1943. Her mother wrote to the Estates Branch complaining that the RCAF’s $70 honorarium for burial expenses was insufficient; a reply came explaining that the amount was fixed, with no exceptions.
