Daughter of Mrs. Linda Nugent, of Carmangay; wife of James F. Buchanan, of Rainier

Emile Nugent was born and raised, along with her brother and five sisters, in Carmangay, Alberta. She was an amateur photographer and an avid reader. She enlisted in September 1942, with a strong desire to serve overseas. Her assessment recommended her as a telephone operator or drill instructor. She was posted to the Currie Barracks in Calgary, where she met James Buchanan, who was posted there as part of the Army Medical Corpus. They married in March 1943. In June of the same year, she was promoted to Lance Corporal.

On September 19, 1943, Emilie Buchanan was riding with nine other passengers in a station wagon. The driver lost control on loose gravel and the car rolled over. None of the other passengers were seriously injured; Emily died the following day from her injuries.
