Doris grew up in Boissevain, Manitoba, the eldest of eight children. She had worked as a café waitress and a hospital maid prior to enlisting in May 1942. Her Personnel Selection Record includes the odd comment “Tries very hard to avoid differences of opinion, but finds it difficult during leisure time.” She worked as a waitress in the Officer’s Mess and Sergeant’s Mess at Minto Barracks, Winnipeg.
On October 24, 1943, Private Burney was admitted to hospital, where she was diagnosed with influenzal pneumonia. She spent nearly two months in hospital, her condition worsening, until she died on December 23. Among her effects were a bible, a diary and an unopened Christmas gift.
